Samvidhan is an amazing hindi series (with english subtitles) written by Hama Zaidi and Atul Tiwari, directed by Shyam Benegal and narrated by Swara Bhaskar. This ten part series by Rajya Sabha TV brilliantly portrays the hustle taken up by the founding fathers in making of the Constitution of India or Samvidhan. The series not only contains amazing speeches by the founding fathers but also encapsulates the hardships faced by them and the country.
We know at the time of the making Constitution India had many roadblocks. Some of them are mentioned below:
- India were to undergo a major partition and many of the resources were to be distributed in the process.
- Also, not much of the resources were available due to the infamous “Drain of Wealth” by the British Empire from India over the cruel British reign.
- Problems like High levels of illiteracy, malnutrition, landlessness and unemployment which had arisen due to centuries of exploitation by Britishers needed to be addressed.
- Social dogmas like untouchability were prevalent in Indian Society leading to socio-economic equity problems.
Despite all these hardships, the sheer brilliance of founding fathers is reflected in the fact that our constitution has not only addressed these problems but also been able to successfully establish democracy in a nation of such a diverse and vast population with literally thousands of regionalities and ethnicities.
So, one obviously becomes curious about how was such an astounding document written and what was the process of it’s making. This very “process” is greatly captured in this series. I hope you enjoy and learn from it the way I did.
